How eBay UK Seller Fees Are Calculated

The fees depend on who is selling. UK private sellers pay no final value fee: they get 300 free listings a month and pay 35p for each extra listing. Business sellers pay a final value fee, a per-order fee and a regulatory operating fee on every sale.

The formula for business sellers

Final value fee = category rate × (item price + postage). The rate depends on the category, and in many categories it drops once the item passes a price limit. Jewellery, for example, is charged 14.9% up to £1,000 and 4% above. On top of that, eBay adds a per-order fee of £0.30 on orders up to £10 and £0.40 on orders above £10, and a regulatory operating fee of 0.35% of the total sale amount.

eBay shows business fees without VAT. If you cannot reclaim VAT on fees, add 20% to the total. If the buyer is outside the UK, an international fee applies: 1.05% for the Eurozone and Northern Europe, 1.8% for the USA and Canada, and 2% for other countries. Private sellers pay 3% on sales to buyers outside the UK.

How the calculator works out your profit

The eBay profit calculator part starts from the amount eBay pays out to you. It subtracts what the item cost you, the postage you pay and other costs such as packaging. The margin is net profit divided by the total sale amount. The break-even price is the lowest item price at which your profit is zero.

Example: a £50 item with £3.50 postage

A business seller sells a pair of jeans in Clothes, Shoes & Accessories for £50 and charges £3.50 postage. The total sale amount is £53.50. The final value fee is 11.9% of £53.50, which is £6.37. The per-order fee is £0.40 and the regulatory operating fee is £0.19. Fees before VAT come to £6.96, and 20% VAT adds £1.39. eBay takes £8.35 in total, or 15.6% of the sale, and pays out £45.15.

Fees are set by eBay, but the price is your choice. Buyers compare your listing with the same item from other sellers, so a price that gives you a 20% margin only works if competitors charge the same or more. Priceva shows competitor prices on eBay so you can set your price with data.
